Build a good web site

A poor web site will only get to the top of Goolge if you cheat! You need pleanty of text to keep the customer interested and on your site for more than a couple of minutes, you need images which have the correct tags defined and you don't want it too gimiky

Keywords

Ensure your meta tags, headings and paragraphs all contain the keywords that your customer is likely to type into a search engine

Submit your site

Regularly submit your site to all of the search engines, after all how can you be listed if they do not know your site exists!

Analyse your competitors web sites

Look at what their doing, be careful not to copy it but if they are higher up the rankings, look at why and improve your site accordingly

Ensure your site has been written well

ensure it is optimised so as there is no excess download time from large images, ensure all html tags have been used correctly etc, and ensure if you have old code from a previous version of the page, don't just comment it out, delete it!

Keep you site updated regularly

Once you are listed, search engines regularly spider your site looking for changes, if it is not updated for months or years at a time, you will slip down the rankings. That said, don't completley rewrite your site all the time. If the search engine lists a page which you then delete, this could go against any future links if it happens too regularly.

Get genuine links in to your site

When the search engines are spidering other sites, they note the number of times there is links in to your web site, the more popular your site is on other web pages, the higher up the google rankings you will be. So get listed on Yellow pages, on BT, on Goolge places etc etc. If you have other businesses, link through to these and vice versa. If appropriate, get customers or suppliers to have reciprical links. An ideal number of inbound links would be in the region of 50, but depending on the keywords you want this may be more, as an example, "Bed and Breakfast" is a very difficult search term to get list on the first page of Google as it there is so many bed and breakfasts with web pages.

There are some very bad practices out there, that when you are offered search engine optimsation you may want to know about. SEO practaces can be put into two clear categories, White hat and black hat. White hat SEO is defined as techniques that meat the guidance provided by the search engines, black hat techniques are those which are deceptive or are dissaproved of by the search engines. Common black-hat techniques include Putting additional hidden text on the screen in the same colour as the background, or is a seperate div to appear off the screen, or giving a different page to machines than what is viewed by visitors (At the time of publishing, this technique was used by "Bath contract flooring"). Other Techniques include spamming blogs, and other interactive websites with inbound liks to your site.
